Afghanistan’s national procurement commission has approved 11 development projects valued at 1.5 billion Afghanis - equivalent to more than $22.5 million - targeting infrastructure, healthcare, and economic opportunity across the country, the office of the deputy prime minister for economic affairs announced Tuesday.

The decision was reached during a commission meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. Commissioners reviewed a total of 30 proposals spanning multiple sectors before granting final approval to the 11 strategic initiatives.

The projects span infrastructure, healthcare, and economic development - three sectors the Taliban-led government has repeatedly identified as priorities in its engagement with regional partners and international institutions.

The approved projects are projected to generate thousands of employment opportunities for local communities, according to the official statement. The government described the initiative as part of a broader push to stimulate economic recovery in a country still rebuilding from decades of armed conflict.

The announcement aligns with a wider pattern of economic activity the Afghan government has pursued since 2021, including multi-billion-dollar trade agreements with regional neighbors such as Uzbekistan, oil exploration contracts with Chinese firms, and participation in large-scale infrastructure projects including the Trans-Afghan Railway.

No further details on the individual projects, their locations, implementing agencies, or timelines were provided in the official statement.
