UK Bus Market Hits 16-Year High as Europe’s Leader in Zero-Emission Transit

UK Bus and Coach Sector Hits 16-Year High Amidst Green Transition

The United Kingdom’s bus, coach, and minibus market has achieved its most robust annual performance since 2008. According to the latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 2024 marked a pivotal year for the industry, characterized by a 70.1% surge in registrations and the addition of 8,390 vehicles to British roads.

This resurgence positions the UK as the largest bus market in Europe, a feat attributed to bolstered operator confidence and significant government subsidies aimed at decarbonizing public transport.

Segmented Market Growth

The expansion was observed across all vehicle categories, though the minibus segment proved to be the primary engine of growth:

  • Minibuses: 4,816 registrations (102.5% increase), accounting for 57.4% of the market.
  • Single-Decker: 1,973 registrations (22.5% increase).
  • Double-Decker: 1,601 registrations (69.6% increase).

Regional Performance

While the national trend was overwhelmingly positive, regional performance varied significantly:

  • England: Recorded a 77.2% increase, accounting for 87.4% of all UK deliveries.
  • Wales: Saw the highest percentage jump at 184.9%.
  • Northern Ireland: Increased by 52.4%.
  • Scotland: Represented the sole outlier with a 15.6% decline in registrations.

Leadership in Zero-Emission Technology

A cornerstone of the 2024 data is the UK’s accelerated shift toward Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEVs). The fleet of electric and hydrogen buses grew by 35.5%, with 1,570 new units entering service.

"ZEVs now constitute 43.9% of all new single and double-decker bus registrations, cementing the UK’s status as Europe’s leader in zero-emission bus volume."

The Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme remains a critical driver for this transition. With the second phase of funding now awarded, industry experts anticipate a continued influx of sustainable deliveries throughout the coming year.

The Rise of the Secondary EV Market

The appetite for electrification is not limited to new vehicles. The used car market also mirrored this trend, with battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales rising 57.4% to reach a record 188,382 units. Similarly, plug-in hybrids and standard hybrids saw growth of 32.2% and 39.3%, respectively, signaling a broad-based consumer shift toward hybridized and electric powertrains.

Industry Outlook

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, noted that the industry has successfully moved past recovery into a period of sustained growth. "Two years of growth and a 16-year high have cemented the recovery of Britain’s bus sector," Hawes stated. He emphasized that government funding is the "standout" factor enabling the UK to meet net-zero goals while improving air quality and providing sustainable transport across every region.
